Romanian government approves setting up of Holocaust institute
The government approved the setting up of the National Institute for Studying the Holocaust in Romania, which will work as a public institution with legal personality, subordinated to the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs.
The main activity of the institute is the research into and the examination of the Holocaust by finding and preserving the Romanian and foreign documents and publications on this phenomenon and setting up a warehouse to preserve them as evidence of the 20th century historical memory.
The National Institute for Studying the Holocaust will contribute its expertise to preserving the spiritual patrimony of the Jewish communities in Romania, which were affected during the Holocaust, and to organizing a Memorial to the Holocaust victims.
The above-mentioned institute gets integrated into an international network of similar organizations and coordinates the Romanian research into the Holocaust nationwide.
The activity of the institute will also focus on interesting questions connected to the preservation of the spiritual and cultural patrimony of the Jewish communities in Romania, which were affected during the Holocaust.
This request is made clear within the cooperation with the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, whose full member Romania became in December 2004.
